Caring for Your Pet Rabbit
Many folks love rabbits and want to keep them as pets. However, keeping a rabbit (or any other pet) is a huge responsibility. So here are some guidelines on caring for your pet rabbit:
1.) Do purchase your bunnies from an authorized pet store. Ask for certifications or documents to show that the dealers are legally selling pets. Look around the pet store, check for cleanliness and most importantly - whether the pets there are healthy and happy.
2.) Do ensure that the bunny you’re getting has been properly vaccinated and has been to the vet regularly. Good pet stores sometimes have their own in-house vets or are attached to a veterinary clinic.
3.) Once you’ve gotten a bunny, do ensure that it’s placed in a comfortable pet carrier, with some food and water. A small pet carrier used for young cats or dogs can also be used for a bunny. Do ensure that the pet carrier is securely placed onto your car so that it doesn’t move around too much. Drive slowly and do not make sudden brakes or turns. Rabbits are sensitive creatures and are prone to heart-attacks if startled.
4.) Once at home, prepare your bunny’s new home in a dry, safe location. You have a choice of either having your bunny indoors or putting it outdoors in a hutch / outdoor area. If your rabbit is to be placed outdoors, do ensure that it is safe from cats or dogs that may try to eat it!
5.) Outdoor rabbits should have a hutch or shelter for it to ‘nest’ in and protect itself from rain, snow and the sun. It should also have a compound area to run around in, but this area must be protected from stray animals that may harm or eat your bunny.
6.) Indoor rabbits are easier to look after as you can designate a room or area indoors for it and it’ll be protected from other animals. However, if you allow your bunny to run around your living room or bedroom or kitchen, do ensure that all electrical wires are hidden and secured. Rabbits love to munch on anything and they may munch on your computer cables if you’re not careful.
7.) Where ever you keep your bunny, the important thing is: CLEANLINESS AND SAFETY.
8.) If you plan to keep more than one bunny, do ensure that you have ample space, whether indoors or outdoors. Like us, rabbits also want some space and privacy. Don’t keep too many bunnies in a small area or they’ll be unhappy and will fall sick.
9.) Send your bunny to the vet regularly. Make sure it has all the necessary vaccinations.
Treat your bunny well and you’ll have many many years of fun and love with it.
