Having a Pet is Good for Your Health and Well-being

Did you know that keeping a pet or pets is generally good for your health and well-being? Pets can have a calming effect on sufferers of medical conditions. As we all know, stroking a pet cat or dog can exude a feeling of calmness and alleviate depression. A person with a dog to accompany him or her at home and around is much happier and healthier than one who lives alone.

Psychologically pets are less demanding than humans. As long as you provide food and shelter for your pets, they are content. Furry and bigger pets such as a cat or dog seems to have the most calming effect on people as some folks tend to threat them as companions or part of the family.

Cats and dogs also express a variety of reactions through their facial expressions and actions. A happy dog will bark and wag its tail excitedly and can be the source of laughter and joy to its owner. You can take your dog to the park, that is, travel easily with it. A good dog can help guard your home as well. Some dogs can be taught to pick up the morning paper for you or do simple tricks like picking up a small toy.

Of course, if you expect love and care from your dog or cat, you must also treat it with love, care and respect. A happy pet will strive to make its owner happy too. Love your pet unconditionally and you’ll be surprised to find that it too will love you back unconditionally.

My Brother’s Partially Forest Norwegian Cats …

Below are photos of my brother’s cats. I think they are a mixed-breed of Forest Norwegian Cats and Persian. Well, I’m not sure but these felines sure look like Viking cats …

As I mentioned in my last posting, I went to a Cat Show with my sis-in-law and 2 of the cats. However, when practising on the cat obstacle course, my brother’s cats avoided most of the obstacles in the beginning …

Hmm … just walking by the poles …

I’ll put up the video of the cats doing (or rather, refusing to do any) of the cat obstacle course for practise sessions.

If your cat also refuse to participate in Cat Shows, just relax.

Sometimes it takes time to train cats to follow obstacle courses and do cat tricks.

At the end of the day, though in the end the cats didn’t participate in the obstacle course, I had a great time at the Cat Show looking at other breed of cats and also taking my brother’s cats out for an exercise!

Thanks to my Bro for allowing me to put up the pics.

Update April 2008:
I wanted to put the videos of the cats at the cat show but there was something wrong with the camera I used so the video didn’t turn out okay. So, I will not be posting them here.

Preparing for a Cat Show

Tomorrow I’ll be accompanying my brother’s wife to a Cat Show. They have 3 Persian cats and a tabby, but for the Cat Show, only 2 of the Persian cats will be at the Show.

As with any other trips, there are several preparations that need to be made if you intend to send your cat or cats to a Cat Show:

Your Cat:
1.) If you plan to get your cat into any competition, do ensure that your cat is prepared for it.
2.) Cats suitable for shows should be people-friendly and not scared of crowds.
3.) Your cats must be healthy. If your cat is ill, do not bring it to a Cat Show, no matter how much you think it’ll win the Cat Pageant or some other competition. Be kind, bring your cat to the Vet instead.

Traveling with your Cat to the Cat Show:
1.) Do ensure you have a proper pet carrier for your cat.

2.) If you need to stop at a gas station or somewhere, do not leave your cats alone for too long. 5 minutes is maximum.

3.) Bring another person with you to help you with your cat or cats. You can take turns to watch the cats while one of you goes to the bathroom, etc.

Other matters to consider:
1.) There must be food and plenty of fresh water for your cat whilst traveling and at the Cat Show. Do not assume that the Cat Show will provide food and water for your cat. Telephone the organizers and ask if you can.

2.) Make sure you bring your cat’s veterinary certificates or health certs. Some cat shows won’t allow cats to join if they don’t have proof of regular health checks. If you have a pet license or anything like it, bring it along.

Okay, then. I’ll put up some photos and/or videos of the cat show in a few days time.

Pet Ferrets for Folks Who Like Fun Furry Friends …

Ferrets are great pets to have as they are interesting and very hyperactive. If you want a pet that is not too common like a dog or cat, but not too timid like a rabbit or too small like a hamster, a pet ferret may be the right choice for you.

Ferrets are curious creatures and when awake, they like to exercise by running around the house. They are also quite secretive, they will hide their favorite toys in some nook and cranny of the house. Mind you, a ferret’s favorite toy can be anything - even your socks, shoe or anything they can get a hold on. Ferrets like to hoard stuffs so if you plan to keep a pet ferret, make sure all your valuables are secured and out of reach.

Toilet-training a ferret can be a daunting task and though ferrets can be toilet-trained if you’ve trained them since young, ferrets are most likely to do their ‘business’ anywhere they want! You can use a cat litter box as your pet ferret’s litter box. Do ensure that the litter box is kept in a quiet and comfortable area, away from excessive heat, cold and noise.

Ferrets love to chew on household things so you must be careful to pack away TV or computer cables and wires from electrical appliances. If you have any plants in the house, it’s better to place your plants in places where your ferret can’t reach and chew it. If you have toys or dolls that you love, do put them in a room where your ferret can’t get them. Ferrets are fun to have, but they can also destroy your stuffs if you’re not careful.

If you plan to keep ferrets as pets, do read up on how to train your pet ferret and do ensure that you and your family is ready to accommodate a new and very hyperactive member of the family. :)
